Understanding House Insurance When You Buy A Home

If you are about to purchase a new home in Cochrane you're going to have to understand house insurance and how it works. Far too many times we hear stories about people that have lost everything from a fire and were not insured. Don't think that this can't happen to you. It can and you need to be prepared for the worst so that you can relax and know that if something terrible were to happen you would be covered.

How much house insurance do I need?

One fatal mistake that a lot of people make is insuring the house according to the value of the possessions, as well as the house. You need to understand that if something were to happen you would have to replace all of these items. The cost of replacement is what needs to be determined when you take out house insurance, not just the value of what's inside. It may cost you more, but it is worth it for that extra peace of mind.

How are payments made?

Most insurance companies offer month by month, bi-yearly or yearly payment plans. You can choose whatever method works the best for you. Almost every company will accept cheques or you can set up a direct payment through your bank. These direct payments work best if you are paying for your insurance every month.

Where do I find cheap insurance?

If you are already paying for car insurance your best bet is to contact the company you are dealing with and ask how much it would be to add homeowner’s insurance to the policy. In most cases you will save money by combining the 2 policies.

Liability insurance

Another thing that you should take into consideration when you buy a home and need insurance, is the possibility of something happening to somebody else on your property. It could be that a handyman falls off a ladder while working in your home and decides to sue you. These types of lawsuits are not as rare as they may seem and it is always a good idea to add liability insurance to your policy - just in case.

Don't ever consider living in a home without having it properly insured. It is the most important thing you can do to protect your assets and your family in case something goes horribly wrong. You have put a lot of time and money to buy your new home and you need to keep it protected. Insurance is really a small price to pay for peace of mind.
