Did you know there is a wolfdog sanctuary in town that rescues wolfdogs and keeps them safe? The Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary provides a safe sanctuary for wolfdogs that have been abandoned and neglected, provides education on wolfdog ownership and educates on the importance of preserving their natural environment. They are a non-profit organization located near Cochrane, Alberta. Here is a look at everything the organization does for the community and the wolfdog population.

About Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary

The sanctuary is 160 acres in size and currently has a pack of 5 resident wolfdogs plus adoptable wolfdogs. They provide a safe rescue for neglected, displaced and abandoned wolfdogs. In addition the sanctuary provides educational programs on responsible wolfdog ownership and the important of preserving wild wolves in their natural environment.

Visit the Sanctuary

The public can visit the sanctuary anytime to see the wolfdogs and learn about them. Visitors can visit all year Thursdays through Mondays but they are closed Tuesdays or Wednesdays. The tour will last 45 minutes in which you’ll be able to visit the wolfdogs, learn about them, go inside the enclosure, feed them some treats and take pictures. You’ll learn the differences between wolves and dogs, clear up myths about wolves and wolfdogs and have a great experience.

Funding

The sanctuary runs primarily off of donations and the support of volunteers. The money donated is used for food, veterinary bills, medicine, transportation and more. They also have a program called Foster a Wolfdog in which people can take in wolfdogs to assist in getting them socialized and rehabilitated. You can also adopt a wolfdog from the sanctuary.

Location and Pricing for Visits

The sanctuary is located 30 miles west of Calgary near Cochrane. They require an appointment prior to visiting. Visits cost $39 for adults.

Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, unlike other sanctuaries, offers a unique hands-on experience and a great education on the lives of wolfdogs.
