Cochrane’s premiere golf course, The Links of GlenEagles, is an important focal point in the community. Every year, GlenEagles hosts a variety of golf tournaments, but none as large and none as much fun as the Monumental Tournament of Aces.

This year’s ninth annual tournament will be held Saturday, Oct. 1 and rumour has it that there are still a few spots open.  This event is one of the Town’s biggest fundraising events with community participation from experienced golfers and those who aren’t sure which end of the club is up.  Proceeds from the event benefit a variety of organizations that serve the Cochrane area.

In total, 180 golfers will spend they day playing a game loosely based on the actual game of golf and a lot of fun activities out on the

Another beautiful community is being planned for Cochrane and you can have a sneak preview this Wednesday, Sept 14.

The working name is Rockland Park and the Burnswest group of developers invite everyone to an open house at The Cochrane Ranche House from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm to present an overview of the neighbourhood.  This area is scheduled to go in where the gravel pit is located by Spray Lake Sawmills downtown and the Family Sports Centre.   You may have already heard of this area as it’s been in the works since 2008.  The developers were waiting for the gravel pit to be completely mined before anything could take place on the site.

During the open house on Sept 14., the owners of the site and the development team will guide visitors through the

Been looking to pick up a few games of the ancient sport of bocce? In Cochrane, bocce players gather by the Bow River Edge Campground, enjoying this relatively simple game that is very hard to master.

The popularity of this low impact sport has been steadily growing among Cochrane seniors.  The Seniors on the Bow group in the town organized a league when two residents of nearby Cremona were looking for local players.  Adeline and Bill Fedyk were looking for more people because they wanted to brush up on their skills so they could compete in tournaments at provincial and national levels.

It was people who curl during the winter who first stepped forward.  Once learning about the game, which is played on short grass on 60 by 12-foot bocce ball courts,

Fed up with the issue of traffic congestion and other problems of a growing municipality, a Cochrane councillor has suggested freezing residential growth in the town north west of Calgary. Councillor Morgan Nagel proposed this extreme measure earlier in August; however, Mayor Ivan Brooker was quick to take issue with it.

The Cochrane Times reports that the Brooker called the idea “all bad”.

Without revenue from new homes there would be no new taxes, therefore existing taxes would rise. Without that new revenue stream, the Town would have to borrow money to repair current infrastructure. There would be no further interest from developers and any new businesses considering setting up shop in Cochrane would be scared away. The Mayor said halting

Is your Cochrane home purchase a good idea?  If you’re looking for a deal breaker, it could be a professional home inspection.  You may be tempted to waive this inspection if you’re trying to put together a clean deal with few conditions, but the information you get from a thorough home inspection is worth its weight in gold.  A home inspection conducted by a professional is essential.  The entire home inspection industry is actually becoming specialized, catering to specific properties in a particular neighbourhood.  For example, historic homes, bungalows, homes close to rivers or properties with swimming pools, a well and septic system.

What does a home inspection entail?

First you want the services of a reputable inspector.  Your real estate

Like any growing municipality, there are some traffic challenges in Cochrane. Before more people move to the town, Councilor Morgan Nagel things the roadways should be sorted out before more houses starting being built otherwise the town will "be in trouble."

At the July meeting of town council, Nagel gave notice of motion, suggesting holding off on residential development and in face, freezing permits until some of the congestion in Cochrane has been addressed or until such time that a solution is found.

Nagel actually thinks that the Town of Cochrane can't absorb any more residential development at all, especially since growth has been crazy the past few years. There isn't even suitable capacity for a further 4 or 5% growth in the foreseeable

The story of how a group of caring residents in Cochrane came together to ensure everyone has a decent place to live is a heartwarming one.

The HomeStead, the town’s first affordable housing development, recently celebrated its first decade of making a difference in the lives of people going through difficult times in their lives.

It all started in 1999

Three Cochrane women, Joann Churchill, Maureen Wills and Susan Flowers, recognized the fact that in this year the rental market in Cochrane was tight. The vacancy rate was close to zero and even Cochrane businesses were finding it next to impossible to bring employees to town because they couldn’t afford to live here.  The women approached Cochrane Town Council and approached the mayor, asking for

Recently a couple of big bears found their way to Cochrane via the Bow River Valley throwing residents into a grizzly tizzy.

One bear spent three hours tearing up a chicken coop, devouring a couple of its inhabitants.  It appeared in a neighbour’s yard the next day and chased a couple of German Shepherds up onto the deck of the home. Fortunately, the homeowner was able to get the dogs inside.  The bear spent some time wandering around in a garage.

Cochrane wildlife officers were able to trap the bear’s companion but weren’t able to find the chicken coop marauder but have set up traps and posted warning signs in the neighbourhood of Fireside in Cochrane.

Apart from the unfortunate demise of the chickens their habitat, no other major damage was
